Creating Environments Where Everyone Wins
I had the privilege of photographing Alicia Dowdell Hayes, Managing Partner of her consultancy, TRISKELION Insights LLC. She shared some of her story.
“A couple of years ago, I came to a crossroads. The company where I built a successful Health research practice restructured in advance of being acquired. I had been there for seven years. The big question became what next? Do I continue to work for someone else or do I take what works well and go out on my own?
As I stepped back to consider this, I noticed that I had been in a mold that didn’t suit me. I was coached more to stay in my lane than encouraged to grow. I was working harder to fit that mold than not.
Using skills from my early training as a moderator, I listened well and created environments where everyone gets better, together. One of my proudest moments recently occurred when my former analyst explained how giving her ownership of projects made her feel valuable in our team effort. This is how to build and lift people.
I chose to build my own LLC on that idea –I provide insights generation, research methodology, and planning across the healthcare industry by creating partnerships.
My company is called Triskelion Insights, partly as an inside joke (I do things in threes - except my jump shot) as my goal is to form and maintain partnerships with other experts in my field. To start, I’m taking my credentials as an extension of brand teams to consult for programs that need high-level support but may not have a budget or headcount to hire.
When I sought new headshots, I wanted to find a way to present myself as who I am and who I aspire to be. I found Alissa through a former colleague. I’ve had previous headshots taken that looked like me but symbolized a time when I tried to fit into a mold.
I talked with her about being myself in a way that makes me feel good about what I have to offer. Alissa is wonderful at what she does. She asks questions about what makes you feel good to get clear direction.
She is extremely professional and that inspires trust and removes a lot of anxiety. When Alissa said, ‘Bring a leather jacket’ I hesitated, but listened. I’m glad I did - In former headshots, I was trying to be and look neutral, to stay in my lane.
Alissa’s headshots felt productive. I felt powerful and professional, as well as very comfortable. She is very precise.
When I saw my pictures, the thought that I looked like this allowed me to feel bold, comfortable, and confident.
Every part of the process was a worthwhile investment!
