Balancing and Enjoying Two Careers

I had the distinct privilege of photographing Brian "BJ" Marchini, who shared the unique path that has shaped his dual career.

“I balance two rewarding careers: one as a theater technician at NYU, and another as a licensed financial planner and educator. Though my academic background is in sound recording, and I spent my college years as a drummer, my journey after graduation took a different turn. I secured my first job in the recording industry, which, despite its challenges, laid the groundwork for my next role as an audio engineer on tour for a decade. From there, I transitioned into tour management before ultimately landing at NYU as a full-time theater technician—a role I truly enjoy, especially for the chance it gives me to work with students.

My interest in financial planning began during the pandemic, influenced by my father-in-law, a seasoned accountant and financial advisor. Intrigued by the field, I decided to pursue it, completed the required exams, and became licensed as a financial planner. Now, I work alongside my father-in-law at Money Concepts. Although I continue my technical role at NYU, I find tremendous fulfillment in helping individuals navigate their financial journeys.

As a financial planner, I focus on asking critical questions: What investments do my clients currently hold? What are their financial goals, both short-term and long-term? I offer comprehensive financial planning services, including handling stocks, securities, retirement strategies, college savings plans, life insurance, loans, and tax guidance. Every client presents a unique set of circumstances, and I enjoy the intellectual challenge of adapting strategies to meet their evolving needs. This dynamic environment keeps me mentally engaged, and the relationships I build with clients are deeply rewarding.

One aspect of financial planning I’m passionate about is education. Over time, I’ve developed various financial literacy materials and had the opportunity to present them in a seminar at NYU. This experience opened my mind to the possibility of expanding my outreach further, with plans to conduct workshops at high schools and libraries in the future. I believe starting financial education early in life is crucial, and contrary to popular belief, financial planning is not just for the wealthy—it’s something that can benefit everyone.

When I needed professional headshots for my financial business, I connected with Alissa through Thumbtack. I was preparing for new marketing materials, including social media profiles, newsletters, and presentations. Alissa guided me through the process seamlessly, and while the poses felt unfamiliar at first, I was genuinely impressed by the results when I saw the photos."
