The Importance of Trying New Things
“Be open to trying new things. Just because you don't have the background on paper, doesn’t mean you can’t learn it.”
Becky Karver-Rowe shared this advice with me during our photo shoot last December. “I’m really glad I’ve taken opportunities that have come my way. My career has evolved in a way that I would never have imagined it could have and it's taken twists and turns into areas that weren’t even on my radar when I first started out.”
“I think the advice that I would give my younger self is to always stay focused on learning, building your experience, and working with great people."
Becky's career started in training & development before moving into a more generalist HR function; from there she took on various leadership positions from leading finance teams, to marketing teams to developing product. "I've really enjoyed having that variety of leadership responsibilities as it helps me see problems from multiple perspectives."
After nearly 10 years in leadership positions, Becky and her husband started a family last year and so she chose to go down a different path and started her own HR & Operational consulting business, working with companies to help shape and implement HR & operational strategies. "It’s been great to rethink what my career looks like coming out of maternity leave and the endless options that are out there.”
In terms of headshots, Becky "always hated" her old headshots: "I just couldn't stand the thought of starting this new chapter of my career with those old headshots - that’s why I booked my shoot with Alissa.”
“I had seen some of her work through Chief and I saw what an amazing job she did. I think women often lose self-confidence in their appearance after having a baby so I was nervous to get new headshots. But Alissa was great and Lisa did an amazing job on hair and makeup; they made the process so easy and fun and I ended up really enjoying it."
Thank you, Becky, for sharing your advice!
