From College Dreams to Corporate Reality: Alicia Sawh's Inspiring Story
Recently I had the privilege of photographing a remarkable young college student, the first in her family to attend an institution of higher education.
“I am the first generation to attend college. I always wanted to go to college, but had no role model. My family is very industrious and values working, but I applied to college and got accepted. My high school allowed us to enroll in college-level classes for transfer. I took advantage of the program and started college with 52 credits. I knew I wanted to work too, and I had to pay for tuition. At eighteen years old, I told myself, ‘I can work and go to school.’
Alicia Sawh was recently hired in her first corporate internship. “I just got my first big-girl job. It is nerve-wracking and exciting. During my six-month internship, I want to move around within the company and see what fits. I’m also learning the value of networking. It is a big thing. I’m meeting all the people I can.
In seeking an internship, Alicia searched for companies with her values. “I decided to apply to Signify, formerly Philips Lighting. I like their 100% carbon-neutral mission. They also provide for underserved and underprivileged communities. Wow, what a great foundation for giving back.”
Sharing advice with younger people Alicia recommends, “Even though there’s pressure to know what you want to do, it’s okay to change your mind. For me, I thought I was going into entertainment because from ages eight through 13, I took acting, singing and modeling lessons. But I decided to study business. I asked myself, ‘What will bring in the money after I graduate?’
Even if I get a business degree and end up in entertainment, the education will still serve me well. Take time to invest in your career path.”
My headshot experience was wonderful! I decided to invest in having a professional headshot. I came across All About Headshots online. Looking at Alissa’s website, I knew she was the right photographer for me. Alissa was very supportive. She gave very good advice about how to stand and smile. She told me, ‘You want to seem warm and personable so a hiring manager
wants to hire you.’
I left with a picture I loved! A big thank you to Alissa for the feedback and the wonderful experience.
Thank you, Alicia, for sharing your story.
